"Light Up and Enliven Aberdeen" Reshapes Floating Restaurant Culture, Promotes Edutainment, and Sustainable Development

Location: Space near Shum Wan Jumbo Pier, Southern District, Hong Kong

Date: December 26, 2024, (Boxing Day)

The 'Light Up and Enliven Aberdeen' event allowed us to witness a community gathering that blended technology, innovation, art, culture, and sustainability, creating a memorable community gathering. Light Up and Enliven Aberdeen celebrated the impressive restoration of the Shum Wan Tai Pak Pier, Shum Wan Sea Palace Pier, and Aberdeen Tai Pak Pier, marking a significant milestone in revitalising seafood boat culture.

At the heart of the event, the Tai Pak Bazaar radiated charm, drawing over 1,000 visitors from all corners of Hong Kong. Here, the dynamic interplay of technology and innovation, the fusion of art and culture, and a commitment to environmental sustainability came to life. Attendees were treated to thrilling street performances, Naamyam Rap, and Cantonese karaoke, creating a rich cultural environment. Additionally, a traditional sampan ride through the typhoon shelter offered a glimpse into the past, showcasing the unique allure of the harbour.

The highly anticipated lighting ceremony kicked off at 5:45 PM, captivating more than 300 attendees who gathered to witness the stunning transformation of the piers. Distinguished speakers, including Mr Wong Tai Yu (Managing Director, New Bond Limited), Mr Chow Kei Chung (Chairman, Aberdeen Kai-Fong Association), and Mr Cheng Kong Chung, Francis, JP (Southern District Officer), delivered inspiring speeches relaying the event's significance and excitement for this monumental moment.

“The Aberdeen Kai-fong Association has been serving the community for 75 years and has always maintained a close connection with the Jumbo Floating Restaurant. Every year, our Lunar New Year gatherings were held at the restaurant. As part of this

"Lighting Up and Enliven Aberdeen" event, Ocean Park has provided us with 80 tickets to be given to low-income families, giving them the opportunity to visit the pandas and enjoy VIP hospitality. Additionally, we provided the opportunity to over 300 elderly members from elderly centres to visit the Tai Pak Bazaar. Ensuring that both the elderly and low-income families can enjoy the festive atmosphere.”

New Bond Limited has worked tirelessly to revive the culture of the floating restaurant, overcoming countless difficulties. Their efforts deserve everyone's support and recognition.”

Together, Eighteen distinguished guests collectively activated the lighting installation, dazzling the area with brilliant lights and creating a stunning visual spectacle. This moment not only enchanted the audience but also rejuvenated the community's spirit and fostered a sense of unity.

The event marks a significant milestone in reshaping seafood boat culture and symbolizes the resurgence of vitality in Aberdeen. Moving forward, the docks will be illuminated once a day. From 6 PM to 8 PM, the piers will be lit, enhancing Hong Kong's unique tourism experience.

Looking Ahead

New Bond Limited will soon launch a seafood boat cultural tour in Aberdeen, offering three boat trips daily (10 AM, 2 PM, and 5 PM, with a special evening trip to enjoy the illuminated docks). Participants will board the historic Tai Pak Ferry, which has been in operation for over 40 years, for a guided tour of seafood boat culture. The tour will also pass by "The Alge Green" a wastewater treatment vessel equipped with a microalgae system, to learn about the role of microalgae in carbon fixation and water purification. Detailed information and booking options will become available on the New Bond Limited official website.

These experiences aim to deepen the community's connection with the harbour, laying the foundation for reshaping seafood boat culture and promoting edutainment and sustainable development.
